NIGHTS OVER EGYPT - THE JONES GIRLS

Genau das Richtige für länger werdende, warme Abende ist "Nights Over Egypt" von den "Jones Girls". Brenda, Valorie and Shirley Jones aus Detroit waren ursprünglich Backup-Sängerinnen für Diana Ross, Lou Rawls, Linda Clifford, Aretha Franklin und andere, bevor sie ab 1979 auch eigenes veröffentlichten. "Nights Over Egypt" wurde 1981 auf der LP "Get As Much Love As You Can" veröffentlicht und von Dexter Wansel, Kenneth Gamble, Leon Huff and McKinley Jackson produziert.

Something for warm and long nights in a tasty atmosphere is "Nights Over Egypt" of the "Jones Girls". The Sisters Brenda, Valorie and Shirley Jones from Detroit were succesfull back-up ladies for musicians like Diana Ross, Lou Rawls, Linda Clifford, Aretha Franklin and others before they published some records under their name. FIRST CHOICE THEME / AIN'T HE BAD - FIRST CHOICE

Unter der Kategorie "3 Damen singen zu Discobeat" mag ich die stimmen von "First Choice" wohl am liebsten. So unglaublich lasziv und doch sophisticated klingt es doch eher selten und der Name der Formation war so durchaus Programm. Also viel Vergnügen mit dem "First Choice Theme (So Let Us Entertain You / Ain't he bad)", veröffentlicht 1976 auf der LP "So Let Us Entertain You".

Maybe my favourite voices in the category of three singing disco ladies are the ones of "First Choice". Lascivious and sophisticated, soft and incisive are describing words of their sound. A good example is the "First Choice Theme (So Let Us Entertain You) / Ain't he bad", recorded in 1976 and published on the LP "So Let Us Entertain You". Much fun with it!

RHYTHM TALK (12") - JOCKO

Die Sugarhill Gang mit ihrem "Rapper's Delight" muss 1979 mächtig eingeschlagen haben, wurde kurz darauf deren Stil (den sie nach verschiedenen Quellen ja selbst schon abgeschaut haben) vielseitig kopiert. Hier versucht sich "Jocko" am McFadden & Withehead Hit "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now", übernimmt Beat und wesentliche melodische Elemente und legt eine Schicht fröhlichen Sprechgesangs darüber. Fertig war "Rhythm Talk", ein toller Song der reif fürs Wiederentdecken ist...

The Sugarhill Gang and their Hit "Rapper's Delight" seemed to be a little earth-quake for the music business in 1979. Short after their success a huge amount of musicians startet to copy the recept of "Rapper's Delight". For example the artist "Jocko" with "Rhythm Talk", in which he used the McFadden & Withehead Hit "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now" like the "Sugarhill Gang" did it with "Good Times" of "Chic". The beat and the main elements of the arrangements together with a new spoken text seemed to be the road to a satisfied audience. Time to promote this well produced song, which was and is rather unknown in Germany...

Heute ist ja internationaler Frauentag. Ich geb zu, unter gewöhnlichen Umständen wäre mir das wahrscheinlich nicht aufgefallen, doch da ich zurzeit in Moskau wohne komm ich an diesem Tag nicht vorbei. Denn hier ist das ein besonders wichtiger, sogar (theoretisch) arbeitsfreier Feiertag an dem sich Floristen und Zuckerbäcker ne goldene Nase verdienen. Wie viele wissen ist ja "die russische Frau" eine besondere Mischung traditioneller und progressiver Rollenbilder - dem Erbe sowjetischer Gesellschaftspolitik sei dank - und es ist durchaus nicht leicht diesen Mix zu durchblicken. 

Die "Three Degrees" liefern den passenden Song dazu: "I like being a woman". Erschienen 1973 auf ihrer LP "The Three Degrees". Der beste Teil des Songs ist meiner Meinung nach der gesprochene Textteil zum Ende hin. Viel Spaß und feiert schön!

Maybe you know, today is international woman's day. Honestly i can say that under usual circumstances i surely would not know about it, but i'm living in moscow at the moment and here it is a huge celebration day. The russian girls and ladys are, like many of you know, a special mixture of traditional and progressive role models. It's a strange heritage of the old soviet times. 

It seems the "Three Degrees" have still sung the right song for the ambivalent situatiuon in the lifestyle of modern russian women. So here comes "I like being a woman", made in 1973 and published on the LP "The Three Degrees". Especially the text of the ending is really nice...
