GREAT EXPECTATIONS - FIRST CHOICE

Aus drei eleganten Damen eine möglichst erfolgreiche Formation zu bilden war nach dem Erfolg der Supremes in den 60ern Aufgabe vieler Plattenfirmen. Im Falle von "First Choice" ist es besonders gut gelungen. In einer Reihe von Platten zwischen 1971 und 1984 wechselten zwar mal einzelne Sängerinnen, die Qualität der Platten blieb aber durchwegs auf hohem Niveau. Häufig wird man bei der Recherche lesen können, das ihre Musik besondere Vorbildfunktion beim Siegeszug von House in den 80ern hatte (vorallem der legändere Track "Let No Man Put Asunder), und so gebührt First Choice wohl ein besonderer Platz unter Damentrios jener Jahre.

Heute hier im Mittelpunkt steht der Song "Great Expectations", aufgenommen 1979 in den berühmten Musicland-Studios in München. Legendäre Discomacher wie Pete Bellotte, Thor Baldursson und Keith Forsey gaben einigen Tracks der LP "Hold Your Horses" den richtigen Schwung, so wie sie es kurz zuvor bereits für die "Three Degrees" und ihrer LP "New Dimensions" getan hatten. Auf der B-Seite finden wir noch die Klassiker "love Thang" "Double Cross", die jedoch von einem amerikanischen Musikteam in Philadelphia aufgenommen worden sind. Euro-Disco trifft also auf American-Disco...

To create a succesful Trio of three elegant ladys was the job of many Record-companys after the huge succes of the "Supremes". In case of "First Choice" it functioned really well. In a range of records between 1971 and 1984 maybe some of the ladys changed, but the quality of the recordings was continuously fantastic. So you can read from time to time, that the work of "First Choice" was influencing the young house-scene in the 80s (especially the track "Let No Man Put Asunder), that's why the group should get a special place under the trios of girls in these years.

The song i choose for today is "Great Expectations", recorded at the famous Musicland-Studios in Munich 1979. Well known disco-musicians like Pete Bellotte, Thor Baldursson and Keith Forsey had given parts of the LP "Hold Your Horses" a good drive similar to the work they did together with Giorgio Moroder for the "Three Deegrees" and their LP "New Dimensions". On the B-Side you can find the classic masterpieces "Love Thang" and "Double Cross". They were recorded in Philadelphia from an american team. Euro-Disco meets American Disco...

BELLY BOOGIE - THE MIKE THEODORE ORCHESTRA

Wie liebe ich diese Bassline, die Gitarenriffs und den schrägen Chor bei diesem Song. Ich geb zu, es gibt auf der 1977 erschienen LP "Cosmic Wind" vom "Mike Theodore Orchestra" wohl bekanntere und weniger eigenwillige Titel, aber "Belly Boogie" ist für mich was besonderes.

How i love this bass-line together with this chorus and the guitars! Maybe on the LP "Cosmic Wind" of "Mike Theodore Orchestra" are more famous songs like "Belly Boogie", but for me this one is something special...

LOVE IN C MINOR - SPHINX

Für die Anhänger schwerer, üppiger Orchestrierung ist der heutige Post vielleicht eine Provokation. Den radikal hat "Sphinx" im Jahre 1983 das Meisterstück Cerrones namens "Love in C Minor" von 1976 "entkernt". Alle klassisch instrumentalen Elemente wurden hier durch synthetische ersetzt, nicht mal ein wenig schwülstiger Damengesang durfte das Original zitieren. Hört selbst! Ich war sofort begeistert.

"Sphinx"'s Version of "Love in C minor" is maybe a kind of provocation for fans of heavy orchester arrangments. All instrumental elements of Cerrones masterpiece were replaced by synthetic sounds, not even some ladys are giving their best in a sweet chorus line. An unusual interpretation, but very good work i think...

Mah-Nah-Mah-Nah als Discoversion von "Lipstique", das präsentier ich heute. Aufgenommen in München und London, produziert von Jürgen S. Korduletsch und publiziert auf der LP "At the Discoteque" im Jahre 1977.

Die Stimme des ungleich populäreren Originals von 1968 war übrigens niemand geringerer als Giorgio Moroder!

LOVE THEME FROM COMA - JERRY GOLDSMITH

Leider hab ich ihn nie gesehen, den Film "Coma". Ein noch recht frischer Michaeal Douglas spielt neben altgedienten Schauspielgrößen wie Richard Widmark in dem Thriller eine Hauptrolle. Den Soundtrack von Coma wiederum kreierte niemand geringerer als Mr. Jerry Goldsmith, seines Zeichens sehr erfahrener Filmkomponist (Planet der Affen, Alien, Logan's Run, Poltergeist). Mit auf der 1978 veröffentlichten Produktion ist auch das wirklich gute "Love Theme from Coma".

Unfortunately i have never seen the movie "Coma". A young and fresh Michael Douglas plays in this Thriller a main role beside famous stars like Richard Widmark or the later Bond-girl Lois Chiles. Responsible for the music was Mr. Jerry Goldsmith, one of the most succesfull film score composer the world had seen. On his soundtrack for Coma we can find a very nice disco song called "Love Theme from Coma". Published in 1978....

MOSTLY MOZART - WALTER MURPHY

Bereits zu Weihnachten hab ich hier einen Song aus der LP "Discosymphonie" von Walter Murphy präsentiert. Heute folgt ein weiterer: "Mostly Mozart". Sehr solide und voll auf der Höhe der damaligen Zeit produziert. Anfangs war ich kein allzu großer Fan des Titels, inzwischen find ich ihn fast genial. Die Mischung zwischen Mozarts klassischem Arrangement und Walter Murphys großzügigen Disco-Funk Zutaten ist einfach hinreißend...

Already on Christmas i posted a song of Walter Murphy's LP "Discosymphonie". Today here is another one: "Mostly Mozart". A solid production, really up-to-date in 1979. At first i was not a big fan of this title, but after hearing it more often i think this production is rather ingeniously! Mozart's classical arrangements and Murphy's disco-funk ingredients work magnificent together...
